7-Eleven SpeakOut Wireless and Chatr Mobile are both prepaid, no-contract budget carriers that sell plans at 4G LTE speeds. 7-Eleven SpeakOut runs on the Telus network, renews plans every 30 days, sells a limited selection of phones, and offers in-store support. Chatr Mobile is owned by Rogers and runs on the Rogers network, with monthly plans that add bonus data when you enrol in auto-pay, two annual plans, and one-time roaming add-ons for travel. Their monthly lineups line up almost tier for tier on price and data, so the real differences come down to network, billing cycle, auto-pay bonuses, top data tier, annual options, roaming, phones, and support.
Plans and pricing
7-Eleven SpeakOut offers 6 prepaid plans: five 30-day plans from $22 to $39 with 0.5GB to 75GB of 4G data, plus an annual plan at $125 for 360 days with unlimited talk and text and no data. Chatr Mobile offers 6 prepaid plans: four monthly plans from $22 to $35 with 0.5GB to 30GB of 4G data, each with an auto-pay data bonus, plus two annual plans at $100/year (400 minutes and 400 texts, no data) and $159/year (40GB). Every plan from both carriers is sold at 4G speeds. Below are representative plans from each carrier.
From $22 to $35, the two carriers match each other on price and included data: 0.5GB at $22, 5GB at $25, 15GB at $30, and 30GB at $35. Chatr adds bonus data with auto-pay on every monthly plan (500MB with auto-pay at $22, 1GB with auto-pay at $25, and 5GB with auto-pay at $30 and $35), which SpeakOut does not offer. SpeakOut adds unlimited international and US messages on its $22 and $35 plans. Chatr bills monthly while SpeakOut renews every 30 days, so the same sticker price costs slightly more per year on SpeakOut. Above $35, only SpeakOut goes higher, with 75GB for $39 per 30 days. For yearly plans, Chatr offers a $159/year plan with 40GB of data, while SpeakOut has no annual data plan. For talk and text only, Chatr is cheaper at $100/year but caps usage at 400 minutes and 400 texts, while SpeakOut charges $125 for 360 days with unlimited talk and text.

5G and network coverage
7-Eleven SpeakOut runs on the Telus network and Chatr runs on the Rogers network. Coverage data is based on registered tower locations from the ISED tower registry and Statistics Canada 2021 census boundaries, updated March 2026. Both parent networks have 5G, but neither carrier includes 5G on its plans: all SpeakOut and Chatr plans are sold at 4G LTE speeds, so customers of both carriers use 4G even where 5G is available. On 4G LTE population coverage, the two networks are nearly identical.
The Telus network reaches 93.0% of Canadians on 4G LTE and the Rogers network reaches 92.9%, a gap of 0.1 percentage points, so population reach is effectively tied. The Telus network has more registered towers (16,007 versus 10,676), which may matter for signal strength in specific areas. SpeakOut plans are listed in all ten provinces plus the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon, while Chatr plans are listed in the ten provinces only. Although Rogers runs a 5G network, Chatr sells its plans at 4G LTE speeds, and the same applies to SpeakOut on the Telus network. If you need 5G, neither carrier in this comparison offers it.

Roaming rates compared
Neither carrier includes roaming on any plan. Chatr sells one-time roaming data add-ons: $20 for 5GB in the USA and Mexico, $15 for 1GB in France, Germany, Italy, or the UK (each sold separately as a country group), and $15 for 1GB in India or China. 7-Eleven SpeakOut does not include roaming on any plan, and we did not find published roaming packages on its official website. Contact 7-Eleven SpeakOut directly to check roaming availability and rates before you travel.

For travel, Chatr is the only one of the two with published roaming options, covering the US and Mexico, four European countries, India, and China through one-time data add-ons. The packs are small, at 1GB for Europe and Asia, so they suit short trips. SpeakOut customers should contact the provider before travelling, or consider a local SIM or eSIM at their destination.
Phones and device financing
7-Eleven SpeakOut sells phones, but the selection is limited to a small range of brands and models. Financing terms are not listed, so contact 7-Eleven SpeakOut to confirm current phone availability and payment options. Chatr Mobile does not sell phones or offer device financing, so all Chatr customers must bring their own unlocked device (BYOD). Customers with an unlocked phone can use either carrier.
Perks and add-ons
7-Eleven SpeakOut includes unlimited talk and text on all plans, with unlimited international and US messaging on the $22, $35, $39, and annual plans. The $22 500MB plan is listed as Pay As You Go. Its top 30-day plan offers 75GB for $39, and the annual plan at $125 for 360 days covers unlimited talk and text with no data. SpeakOut plans are listed in every province and territory. SpeakOut also sells phones, with a limited range of brands and models. We did not find add-ons or roaming packages on the SpeakOut official website, so contact the provider to check what is currently available.
Chatr Mobile adds bonus data with auto-pay on all four monthly plans: 500MB with auto-pay on the $22 plan, 1GB with auto-pay on the $25 plan, and 5GB with auto-pay on the $30 and $35 plans. The $25, $30, and $35 plans list long distance calling. Chatr offers two annual plans: $100/year with 400 minutes and 400 texts, and $159/year with 40GB of data plus unlimited international and US messages. One-time roaming data add-ons are available for the US and Mexico, Europe, India, and China. Chatr is BYOD only and does not sell phones.
Customer support
Both carriers offer in-store support, which suits customers who prefer help in person. 7-Eleven SpeakOut adds a contact option and self-serve support articles, while Chatr adds an online support ticket system and mail. Neither carrier lists phone support or live chat in our data. 7-Eleven SpeakOut holds a 5/5 customer rating on Topicks.ca, while Chatr has no customer ratings on Topicks.ca yet.
Who should choose which?
- You want more than 30GB on a budget plan -- SpeakOut offers 75GB for $39 per 30 days, above the Chatr top monthly tier of 30GB
- You want unlimited talk and text for a full year -- the SpeakOut annual plan is $125 for 360 days with no minute or text caps
- You want unlimited international and US messages on a low-cost plan, starting at $22
- You live in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, or Yukon, where SpeakOut plans are listed and Chatr plans are not
- You want to buy a phone from your carrier and the limited selection works for you
- You want a carrier with a 5/5 Topicks.ca customer rating
- You will use auto-pay and want bonus data on top of your plan -- up to 5GB with auto-pay on the $30 and $35 plans
- You want monthly billing rather than a 30-day cycle, which works out slightly cheaper per year at the same sticker price
- You want an annual plan that includes data -- 40GB for $159/year
- You are a very light user and 400 minutes and 400 texts a year for $100 covers your needs
- You travel and want published one-time roaming add-ons for the US and Mexico, Europe, India, or China
- You prefer the Rogers network and already have an unlocked phone
7-Eleven SpeakOut wins on its 75GB top tier, unlimited annual talk and text, international messaging on low-cost plans, availability in the territories, and phone sales, backed by a 5/5 customer rating on Topicks.ca. Chatr wins on auto-pay data bonuses, monthly billing, an annual data plan, and published roaming add-ons for the US, Mexico, Europe, India, and China.
The deciding factors are how much data you need, whether you will use auto-pay, whether you travel, and whether you prefer the Telus or Rogers network at your address. Both carriers sell 4G-only plans, so 5G is not a factor in this comparison.
